Capsule Geology

The Northstar-Lindeborg zone, which is located 550 metres north of the Big Missouri deposit, lies within south-southeast striking, moderately dipping andesite, agglomerate and lapilli tuff, with interbedded cherty tuff of the Lower Jurassic Unuk River Formation. (See Big Missouri - 104B 046 for enhanced geology).

A north-trending, moderately west-dipping mineralized zone occurs in the Upper Horizon. The horizon consists of beds of mixed cherty tuff and intense sericite-pyrite-carbonate altered andesite. Pyrite, sphalerite, galena, and minor chalcopyrite occur as patches, thin lenses, and disseminated grains within the bleached andesite- chert tuff zone. The zone is cut by quartz and quartz-carbonate veins.

The Northstar Zone contains 3 semi-regular zones of mineralization with the upper and middle zones corresponding to the Province and Big Missouri Zones respectively, although the zones were reported to be more indistinct further south making correlations more difficult.

In 2011, ten drill holes were drilled into the Northstar zone (Assessment Report 33267). This zone occurs along the crest of the ridge 300 metres north of the Province/Big Missouri drilling, the Northstar Zone appears to be a continuation of the Province Zone with a break in mineralization due to erosion of the Province Zone created by a small topographic depression. The Northstar Zone contains 3 semi-regular zones of mineralization with the upper and middle zones corresponding to the Province and Big Missouri Zones respectively although the zones are not as distinct as further south making correlations more difficult. A near surface quartz-sericite-pyrite altered zone within altered andesite with moderate silicification, quartz stockwork and base-metal mineralization, is found at the crest of the ridge and was encountered in drill holes over a length of 150 metres and extending up to 45.0 metres depth. Drill holes P11-195, 201 and 204 all encountered good gold mineralization at the top including 0.90 gram per tonne gold over 53.87 metres in P11-204 plus an isolated result of 299.0 grams per tonne gold over 0.60 metre in P11-195 that also contained visible gold in drill core (Assessment Report 33267).

Drill hole P11-195 displays the 3 zones well represented by 1.02 grams per tonne gold and 6.4 grams per tonne silver over 14.13 metres from the collar (Province), 1.65 grams per tonne gold and 2.2 grams per tonne silver over 27.57 metres at 115.0 metres (Big Missouri), and 0.27 gram per tonne gold and 7.6 grams per tonne silver over 72.06 metres at 219.94 metres depth (Assessment Report 33267).

The near surface zone (Province) can be correlated well between drill holes and sections, the other zones are variable and may even join to the north. These zones continue eastward to the Unicorn Zone and may combine creating a large zone but then get cut-off by the Union Creek Fault.

Limited drilling north hampers correlation, but mineralization is still observed drilling yielded 8.36 grams per tonne gold over 2.85 metres and 7.33 grams per tonne gold over 12.79 metres in P10-049, indicating the system continues north.

A hole drilled in 1979 intersected 16.5 grams per tonne gold, 68.6 grams per tonne silver, 3.44 per cent lead, and 4.3 per cent zinc over 0.5 metre (Assessment Report 7800).

The Northstar zone contains mineable reserves, with an average waste to ore ratio of 1.59 to 1, of 47100 tonnes grading 4.28 grams per tonne gold and 20.57 grams per tonne silver (George Cross News Letter No.102, 1988).

In 2009, a series of four holes (P09-023 to 027) were done in a north-south line along the axis of the Big Missouri ridge, all drilled to the east. One additional drill hole (P09-028) was done from the most southerly site, drilling to the west to target surface mineralization. The Northstar holes, in addition to the Province (104B 147), Unicorn (104B 044) and Rambler (104B 144) were planned as a widely spaces fence to test the continuity of mineralization from surface to depth and along a roughly north-south trend following the zones. Drill hole P09-024 observed on encountered a small zone of 8.36 grams per tonne over 2.85 metres at 99.0 metres depth (Assessment Report 31489). Rocks in the drill hole are varieties of andesite with the mineralization hosted in a quartz breccia vein. Several more silicified zones were encountered although gold grades were low.

In 2010, surface sampling by Ascot Resources in a 45 metres long trench (T10-024) yielded 2.50 grams per tonne gold over the 45 metres including 63.1 grams per tonne gold over 1 metre in the middle of the line plus a mineralized sample at the eastern end of 0.68 gram per tonne gold over 1 metre (Assessment Report 32357).

In 2011, Ascot Resources drilled at least 10 holes into the Northstar zone with good results.

The Dilworth property to the north of the Northstar and the Premier property (which includes the Northstar) were held as a single entity in the late 2000s by Boliden Ltd and Ascot Resources. See Unicorn (104B 044) for details of work done near the Northstar (104B 146) and Big Missouri (104B 046) about 400 metres to the south of the Northstar for further related details of a common property history and geology. See Big Missouri for 2014 indicated and inferred resources and for related bibliographic information.
